Development Manager
Lucem Health
Who We Are
We created Lucem Health with Mayo Clinic in 2021 to make clinical AI useful and effective in the real world so it can fulfill its immense potential to help transform healthcare. Our vision is a world in which clinicians detect problems before they become life threating and patients get world class care, everywhere. Our mission is to revolutionize care delivery through the practical application of clinical AI.
After a long journey of discovery, we are now focused on helping healthcare providers deliver more proactive care using a unique approach to early disease detection that is easy to implement and does not require clinicians to change how they practice medicine. Given that providers have been struggling financially for some years now, we have also developed an innovative business model in which we partner with life sciences companies (pharma/med device) to fund deployment of our early disease detection at providers.
In effect, our business is now about aligning provider and life sciences incentives to deliver better, more proactive care that changes, and even saves, patient lives.
Position Summary
As we continue to scale our engineering organization after 5 successful years, we are looking for a dedicated Development Manager to help lead and rebalance our growing team. Reporting directly to the CTO, you will take ownership of day-to-day team management, agile execution, and the career development of our engineers.
While this role does not require daily coding, you must possess a solid technical foundation. You will manage a cross-functional group of engineers building solutions within our specific stack (GCP, Python, React, Go). You don’t need to be an expert in all of these technologies, but you must be technical enough to understand our architecture, participate meaningfully in design discussions, and effectively unblock your team. This role is highly impactful, establishing a crucial middle-management layer that allows technical leadership to focus on long-term, strategic initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership & Growth: Lead, mentor, and support a team of direct reports. Conduct regular 1:1s, manage performance reviews, and guide career progression tailored to our near-startup environment.
- Operational Excellence: Oversee daily engineering operations and agile delivery. Partner with the existing Development Manager, Product Managers and Team Leads to ensure reliable, timely execution of the product roadmap using JIRA and Confluence.
- Technical Guidance & Empathy: Act as a technical sounding board for the team. Leverage your background to understand the complexities of building scalable applications in the cloud, helping to guide architectural decisions and ensure engineering best practices without needing to be the smartest person in the room on every specific language.
- Process Improvement: Champion improvements to our software development lifecycle. Understand the mechanics of our CI/CD pipelines (GitHub/GitHub Actions) well enough to help the team optimize their deployment processes and scale efficiently.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with clinical experts, product management, and implementation engineering to ensure our platform meets the complex requirements of early disease detection and clinical workflows.
Qualifications
- Proven experience as a Development Manager, Team Lead, or in a similar leadership role managing multi-disciplinary engineering teams in a fast-paced or startup-like environment.
- Solid foundational background in software engineering. You should be comfortable leading teams that build applications using modern programming languages (experience with Python, Go, or React is highly preferred, but not strictly mandatory if you have equivalent experience).
- Experience operating within modern cloud environments (familiarity with GCP is a strong plus, though AWS or Azure experience translates well).
- Demonstrated experience managing agile development cycles, ticketing, and technical documentation (using tools like JIRA and Confluence).
- Conceptual understanding of modern DevOps practices, code storage, and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions).
- Demonstrated ability to transition a flat organizational structure into a more mature, scalable engineering unit.
- Experience working with both full-time engineering resources and staff augmentation services.
- Experience in healthcare, clinical data, or ML Ops is a massive plus. Big plus for those with FHIR and/or OMOP experience.
